Transfer Station
Sheffield is part of the Northeast Kingdom Waste Management District (NEKWMD). Sheffield and Wheelock jointly operate the Transfer Station where residents of both towns, after having obtained a valid permit sticker, can dispose of their household refuse and, more importantly, recyclable materials. The more that is recycled the less must be disposed of and the lower the cost to operate the Transfer Station and, ultimately, to the residents of Sheffield and Wheelock. The Transfer Station is open between the hours of 8 A.M. and 5 P.M. Wednesday and Saturday.
The transfer station is NOT for the disposal of commercial waste.
Bulky Days: dates on which large and/or bulky items, such as bedding, furniture, etc., may be brought to the Transfer Station for disposal, are the SECOND Wednesday and following Saturday of April, July and October. As the cost to operate the Transfer Station is reflected in the taxes that the residents of Sheffield and Wheelock must pay, everything that helps reduce that cost is a direct savings to the taxpayers of the communities.
Additional items including electronics and tires are recycled at the NEK Waste Management site in Lyndonville. A complete list of items accepted at their site may be found at www.nekwmd.org
